Summer is just about over and I’m sure you have been bombarded with the with the love of pumpkins and every pumpkin flavored items you can imagine. Are you getting excited? It’s time to pull out your slow cookers and gather your soup recipes, fall is here and it’s all about comfort food. It’s the time of year when the slow cooker makes itself a permanent fixture on your kitchen counter. Do you have favorite slow cooker recipes that you and your family love to make?
Pumpkins- A very large berry, yes we said berry. But like a tomato it’s also recognized as a vegetable. You can use it in pies, cakes, breads, smoothies, cookies, stews, soups or just roast it; either way is a very delicious treat.
Sweet Potatoes & Yams- Did you know that there is a difference? Some people don’t and that’s perfectly okay. They are perfect for baking, adding into a pie, roasting or even adding them to a cold salad; change it up and make a harvest sweet potato salad.
Butternut Squash- This is another hidden gem that can be roasted, steamed, put into a salad or even made into a soup. Add it into your pasta, some slaw or even roast it with some Parmesan cheese on top. You’ll love the creamy texture and it’s filling too.
Eggplant- This is one of my fall favorites. I love it because around mid-September to mid-October I can always count on my grandpa making some eggplant parmesan.
These are just some of the fall foods that we will enjoy for the next few months. What are some of your fall favorites?
Another thing we love about the fall is…it’s canning season!!! So every fall my grandparents go out and pick, apples, peaches, and tomatoes. Then they come home and begin the canning process. They stock the pantry with tomato soup, applesauce and peaches. We will eat off these all year. As kids we would get excited because we love the home-made applesauce (it’s chunky and has less sugar). The soup has okra, and corn in it and pairs well with a grilled cheese sandwich. We also use the peaches for preserves or to pour over ice cream, make a pie or a cobbler. Writing all these has me thinking of my childhood, I may need to go call my grandparents. Do you have activities and recipes that you do every fall with your family?
We made it to October, the leaves are changing, the weather is getting colder and the holidays are among us. It’s also our blog anniversary month.
We’re happy to announce that we have a new logo. Thanks so much to Amanda from Creative On Paper, she captured our style and purpose so well.
Through out the month we will talk about fall vegetables, fall family traditions and kitchen decor with fall colors.
Do you and your family have any fall traditions?
Do you go apple picking? Or take a hayride at the pumpkin patch?
