Taste Test Tuesday: Pepperidge Farm Carrot Cake Cookies

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter. On Easter during dinner we were having a conversation about cakes and cookies, and someone mentioned Pepperidge Farms Dessert Shop Cookie line that came out a few months ago. While talking about the the new cookies we decided that we would have them on the blog this week.

These are a very soft cookie. The orange cookie is filled with nuts, pieces of carrots and white chocolate. A great snack idea, but beware you can eat the whole bag in one sitting; we did.

Some may ask if this really tastes like carrot cake….Yes, it does but it’s not as intense of a flavor as you may think. We had some this morning with our coffee and then again as a dessert after lunch.

Try them out and let us know what you think. What do you think of cakes being made into cookie flavors?

Very Vanilla Fruit Salad

Spring should be here soon, or at least we hope. Get in the mood for a refreshing fruit salad. This recipe was provided by the wonderful people over at McCormick, who graciously provided us with a portion of the products and recipes to try. Let’s just say we had a great time in the kitchen with everything.

Very Vanilla Fruit Salad_1007x545

Ingredients (Makes 10 (1/2 cup) servings

  • 2 cups strawberries, halved
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 cup fresh or canned pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup cantaloupe chunks
  • 2 kiwis peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 teaspoons McCormick Pure Vanilla Extract

Directions

  1. Mix fruit, confectioners’ sugar and vanilla in large bowl. Cover.
  2. Refrigerate 1 hour or until ready to serve.

This a great side dish to serve with the Cheese and Bacon Casserole dish, or just as a snack itself. Get your kids involved by letting them mix up the fruit in the bowl or even helping you serve it.

Thank you so much to McCormick for providing us with these seasonings and recipes. Be sure to check out their site for more recipes and ideas not just for holiday cooking but for everyday use.

Taste Test Tuesday: Ghirardelli Candy Making Chocolate

Do you love chocolate? The smooth, rich flavor of a great creamy treat. Our friends over at Ghirardelli has a candy making chocolate just for you.

We decided to use this candy and dipping chocolate to make chocolate covered strawberries. Who doesn’t love fruit with a side of chocolate?

A very easy chocolate to use and work with. All you have to do is cut the amount that you want to use and place it in a microwave safe bowl on medium high heat in 30 second intervals. You can also make a double broiler on top of the stove if you want.

Not many people use or even like white chocolate but we love it. You still get the same great taste of chocolate but just not as rich as milk chocolate. No worries this candy is available in milk chocolate as well.

There are so many choices for you. Need some help just let us know.

Taste Test Tuesday: Cheez-It Duoz

Hello everyone, it’s snack time here at Southern Roots Kitchen. For today’s snack we are going crunchy and cheesy.

Cheez-It has done it again. They have taken our love for cheese and combined very bold and powerful flavors. Duoz come in three varieties:

Sharp Cheddar & Parmesan

Zesty Queso & Cheddar Blanco

Smoked Cheddar & Monterrey Jack

Each of these combinations create an excitement in your mouth. They are great by themselves as a snack or add them to your favorite salad or soup. Place a handful in a bowl of tomato soup and you are in heaven.

Cheez-It Duoz make great snacks for kids as well. Add them to a small ziplock bag and put it in their lunch box. Crumble some on top of your taco salad to give you an extra crunch.

We really enjoyed these crackers and will definitely keep them in our pantry. Thanks for stopping by the kitchen today!!

Taste Test Tuesday: Hot Chocolate Cupcakes

What do you think of when you think of hot chocolate? How about marshmallows, whipped cream and a steamy rich cup of chocolate velvet. Well today we will experience hot chocolate in a new form….cupcakes!

This is not your typical chocolate cupcake, this cupcake is a combination of devils food cake  and chocolate cake with some marshmallow bites inside. Yes, we said marshmallow bites, they remind you of the mini marshmallows that you find in your cup of hot cocoa.

You can see the marshmallow bites in the cake batter. Very simple and easy to make. Just a reminder the box only makes 12 cupcakes, not 24 like most box mixes.

Now for the frosting (it comes in the box, you have to whip it up real good), it’s marshmallowy goodness.  Just think Fluff, the stuff we used as kids when we didn’t use jelly with our peanut butter sandwiches. This frosting tastes just like it, even has a similar consistency. The frosting is a little sweet so be careful.

Take a look inside and you can see the marshmallows in the batter. Such a warm and tasty treat. We’ve spotted them in Wal-Mart, Aldi’s, Target and some grocery stores, all for under $2.50 a box.

Here’s another treat: They have brownies too!!!

Thanks so much for stopping by the kitchen today, we hope you enjoyed today’s post, eat up!
