Foodie Friday: Buttercream Cupcake Cafe

It’s been a while since we have had a Foodie Friday blog post. Well we decided to feature a local business that we found. They have amazing cupcakes.

Buttercream Cupcake Cafe is located in Chesapeake, Virginia owned and operated by Kimberly Dionne Middleton. Whether you are calling to place an order or walking through the door of the cafe, you are always greeted with a smile. Spending over an hour in the cupcake cafe we tried out four different flavors (we will share two with you today) which is only a tiny percentage of their evolving menu.

This is the Elvis cupcake. Yes, we said Elvis, a moist chocolate cupcake with a peanut butter filling, topped with a banana buttercream and a dollop of peanut butter. This was a great combination of flavors that marry well and creates a dance party in your mouth.

This explains what was left of the cupcake. We meant to take a picture of the inside of the cupcake but it was so good we couldn’t put the fork down.

Can you say Apple Pie? Imagine gramma’s apple pie inside a rich cupcake with an apple filling. This is what you get. Kimberly mentioned adding a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, but we couldn’t wait to get the cupcake home to try it, so we just ate it plain.

Buttercream Cupcake Cafe has a wide variety of flavors with a menu that changes with the seasons. Summer is coming so look out for Tropical Paradise and Watermelon.

Taste Test Tuesday: Todd’s Dirt

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by the kitchen today. As you can tell we had a blast at Metro Cooking DC this year. We learned a lot, saw a lot and met some really great vendors who we will continue to tell you about as we review their products. This is another vendor we met at Metro Cooking DC and we are addicted to their products.

Todd’s Dirt

After years of trying to recreate a seasoning blend that was made by a family friend, Todd was able to create something even better. Why is it called dirt? Well if you look at the bottle it resembles grass and dirt that you would find in your backyard. That’s just how big and noticeable the seasoning is. There is no MSG and it’s gluten-free. We had the opportunity to taste the dirt as a dip and on chicken. One bite and we knew this was a hit. Todd’s Dirt comes in three different blends:

Original: A mild savory seasoning made with 14 spices including, Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Kosher Salt, Pepper, Onion, Rosemary, Sage, Cilantro and other spices. Great on meats, vegetables, potatoes, and pasta. It even comes in a no-sodium blend called Low Down Dirt.

Bayou: This Creole/Cajun style seasoning has a very bold flavor made with 16 spices including, kosher salt, chipotle powder, sage, thyme, rosemary, chili powder and many more. If you are looking to spice things up a bit then this is your choice.

Crabby: A gourmet seafood seasoning blend made with 20 spices including, dry mustard, cayenne pepper, sage, onion, oregano, basil, ginger, cloves, white and black pepper, and many other spices. It’s Todd’s version of Chesapeake Bay seasoning. This seasoning was awarded the 2011 Silver Sofi award in the Flavor Enhancing category by the National Association of Specialty Food, which is the highest honor you can receive in the specialty food industry.

All of these spices were fantastic. You can use these seasonings to make dip with some sour cream. Crabby Dirt and some sour cream will kick up your shrimp cocktail dish. Sprinkle some of Todd’s dirt on some fresh popped popcorn, you’ll love it!

You can get them online at Todd’s Dirt or from some local grocery stores like Giant, Ingles Market, Whole Foods, and Central Market. Don’t see your local store on the list? Check the website to see if a store near you carries it, if not just order from the website. Hint: It is a great $5.00 investment!! They also have t-shirts, cookbooks, and gift packs if you are looking for a gift for the foodies in your life.

We hope you enjoyed today’s post. Thanks for spending time with us today. Feel free to leave a comments on the blog and let us know what you think.

Taste Test Tuesday: Cookies & Corks

Happy Tuesday Everyone! We hope your Thanksgiving holiday was filled with love, laughter, friends and family. Ours was great, we truly enjoyed ourselves.

As you know we attended Metro Cooking DC at the beginning of this month. While we were there we had the chance to sample a lot of food. One thing we came home with was some cookies from Cookies & Corks. This company has created sweet and savory cookies that are to be eaten with wine. The cookies come in very creative flavors like sea salt, lemon, sage, apricot, dark chocolate and espresso.

You can purchase cookies to be paired with white wine, red wine and sparkling wine. The distinct flavors of the cookies paired with the wine are a great match. Most people would just pair wine with cheese, but don’t worry there are cheese flavored cookies to appeal to your taste buds. We had our friends and family try the cookies over the holiday weekend. Everyone took turns sampling the cookies with the corresponding wines. Ginger Molasses, Shortbread and Zesty Lemon were the favorites.

There is even a wine pairing guide to help you with the process. Each box of cookies is $7.95 and makes a great hostess gift for this time of year.

Cookies & Corks great job on the flavor combinations we can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

Be sure to check out their site, they have a holiday sale going on right now. You don’t want to miss this.

Taste Test Tuesday: Dee’s Gourmet Pretzels

Happy Tuesday everyone and thanks for stopping by the kitchen today. We’re back from Metro Cooking DC and we have a lot to share with you. During the expo we had the chance to check out different vendors and see what they were offering. One of the vendors we visited was Dee’s Gourmet Pretzels, located in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.  Dee’s offers chocolate and caramel covered pretzels that come in over 40 flavors.

We had one bit of a white chocolate covered pretzel and ending up buying a Reese’s Piece’s and chocolate covered pretzel. Smooth, rich chocolate coats a salty pretzel and provides you with a great treat. We must admit that these are a little addictive, but we didn’t mind…it’s chocolate!

Dipped in peanut butter, then coated in chocolate with a little extra drizzle was such a party for my taste buds. Gotta order some more of these.

Don’t want the traditional pretzel? Don’t worry Dee’s also has pretzel rods. A great on-the-go and a perfect party favor.

Pretzels make very good gifts for all ages. Dee’s has party trays for many occasions along with chocolate covered marshmallows, graham crackers and Oreos. Check out her sugar free and gluten free options as well.

Thanks so much for stopping by the kitchen today, be sure to check us out all week as we give you our recap from Metro Cooking DC.
