What do these colored tabs really mean?

Have you ever wondered what the color tabs on loaves of bread mean? Some are yellow, red or even blue. I remember asking my Home Economics teacher in Junior High School what those tabs really meant. That one question turned into a homework assignment for me. I didn’t mind because it was about food and research so I was all for it. Now fast forward about 15 plus years (Yeah I know I just dated myself…lol), I wondered if the same information that I found out years ago was still valid. So I began my research again to see what I could find out.

Those colored tabs really do mean something. Each colored tab represents a different day of the week; the day the bread was baked. The date that is stamped on the tab is the date the bread needs to be sold by. Sometimes they won’t always be tabs but the twists with the dates stamped on the bag itself, the colors still remain the same. The colors are listed below. So next time you are in the bread aisle or at your local bakery take a look at the colored tab or twist to see how fresh your bread is.

Monday – Blue

Tuesday – Green

Thursday – Red

Friday – White

Saturday – Yellow

Note: This is a universal adopted procedure, however some companies may change it up a bit. But for the most part all companies still with this standard procedure.

Healing Herbs and Spices

20130829-082651.jpg

Going through Pinterest I came across this photo. What do you think?

Do you cook with herbs and spices? Have you used them for other things besides cooking? I know I will drink mint tea if I have an upset stomach, but I notice the chart says to try basil. This seems like an interesting task.

This has me thinking, could herbs and spices really help with ailments? Looks like I have some research to do. It would be nice to see which items that we have in our pantry can help us obtain a healthy lifestyle.

Have you tried any of these? Got some tips to share? Feel free to comment and let me know!!

Foodie Friday: Buttercream Cupcake Cafe

It’s been a while since we have had a Foodie Friday blog post. Well we decided to feature a local business that we found. They have amazing cupcakes.

Buttercream Cupcake Cafe is located in Chesapeake, Virginia owned and operated by Kimberly Dionne Middleton. Whether you are calling to place an order or walking through the door of the cafe, you are always greeted with a smile. Spending over an hour in the cupcake cafe we tried out four different flavors (we will share two with you today) which is only a tiny percentage of their evolving menu.

This is the Elvis cupcake. Yes, we said Elvis, a moist chocolate cupcake with a peanut butter filling, topped with a banana buttercream and a dollop of peanut butter. This was a great combination of flavors that marry well and creates a dance party in your mouth.

This explains what was left of the cupcake. We meant to take a picture of the inside of the cupcake but it was so good we couldn’t put the fork down.

Can you say Apple Pie? Imagine gramma’s apple pie inside a rich cupcake with an apple filling. This is what you get. Kimberly mentioned adding a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, but we couldn’t wait to get the cupcake home to try it, so we just ate it plain.

Buttercream Cupcake Cafe has a wide variety of flavors with a menu that changes with the seasons. Summer is coming so look out for Tropical Paradise and Watermelon.
